Summer is here, temperatures are rising, and while we are eagerly anticipating longer and warmer days, it is imperative that we remain vigilant for signs of heat-related illnesses. Older adults have a harder time adjusting to sudden temperature changes, making them more prone to dehydration and heat stroke. We recommend following the tips below this summer to keep your loved one safe:
Tips for Seniors to Beat the Heat
- Drink water regularly. Do not wait until you’re thirsty to start drinking water. It is recommended to drink 6-8 glasses of water daily. For seniors’ on-the-go, it’s best to drink plenty of water before heading outdoors and throughout their time in the sun.
- Eat foods that will help you stay hydrated. While drinking water is one of the best ways to stay hydrated, some foods can help seniors stay hydrated such as; Berries, tomatoes, cucumbers, melons, lettuce, watermelon, and oranges.
- Take cooler showers or baths. Cold baths or showers can help the body cool down after a day out in the sun. Take breaks if you plan on being outside all day. Taking a hydration break can help seniors stay hydrated if they plan on being outside all day. Drink water and try to escape into some shade or air conditioning for at least 5 minutes to give yourself a break.
- Dress lighter. Try wearing loose, light-colored clothes. Dark-colored clothing is prone to absorb heat. Wear a hat, provides shade ensuring you’ll feel cooler. These simple changes will help you both stay cool and avoid sunburn.
