Beat the heat!
Tips from the CDC
Here are some tips from the CDC to prevent any heat related illness during extreme temperatures:
- Drink more fluids regardless of your activity level - don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink * Warning: if you are on MD ordered fluid restriction, or take water pills, consult your doctor
- Don’t drink liquids that contain alcohol or large amounts of sugar- these actually cause you to lose more body fluid
- Stay indoors and, or at all possible, stay in an air conditioned space
- Know of all heat relief shelters in your area
- Take a cool shower or bath to cool off
- NEVER leave anyone, in a closed parked vehicle
- Limit outdoor activity to morning and evening hours
- Cut down on intense exercise
Be Preventative
Use the following tips to protect yourself from the sun:
- Wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses
- Wear long sleeves and long pants that are lightweight, light colored and loose fitting
- Put on sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher
- Walk with an umbrella
Be Aware of Those at High Risk
Although any one at any time can suffer from heat related illness, some people are at greater risk than others. Regularly check on those at high risk:
- Infants and young children
- People aged 65 or older
- People who have a mental illness
- Those who are physically ill, especially with heart disease or high blood pressure
