Healthy Living is all Healthy Brain Strategy!

“Healthy living is all healthy brain strategy,”  Dr. Wendy Suzuki. Dr Suzuzki is a professor of neuroscience and psychology at New York University and an author.  Her book Healthy Brain , Happy Life: A Personal Program to Activate Your Brain and Do Everything Better, was featured in a Medical Daily article.

According to Suzuki there are 4 simple ways to keep your brain healthy:

    • Exercise – this is linked to improved mood, attention and memory as well as creativity and increased interests.
    • Healthy, balanced diet - eating foods lower in fat and higher in vegetables and fruits helps to lessen the risk of cognitive decline.
    • Engagement - through “brain game” activities such as a Sudoku puzzle, crossword puzzles or building blocks for young children.
    • Mental Health – research links depression with increased risk for cognitive decline, as does anxiety and stress.

The good news – many of these factors are interrelated and implementing one means you’re probably implementing another.

For example: If you are regularly working out - you are keeping both your physical and mental self in shape. Exercise is a known stress-reliever. It increases the chemical norepinephrine, which moderates the brain's stress response and increases your mental health stability. Sometimes, even just taking a walk will do the trick - consult our blog Walking - Incredible Health Benefits! for more tips!

Additionally, the below list contains some habitual and strategic factors to keep in mind daily for healthy brain living:

    • Not smoking
    • Remembering to wear your seatbelt and helmet to prevent brain injury
    • Being social within your community

Brain health is all about balance and making your brain a priority will improve its function for a lifetime.
